Best Animated TV Series of All Time

Best Animated TV Series of All Time

In some weird twist of a cultural destiny, animation in this hemisphere – the cartoon television, films, shorts, advertising etc. – seems to speak only in jokes, and mainly only in kids. Western cartoons are funny and the American movies that hit Oscars over their heads every year are the ones consumed by children and sold for families, designed to make everyone laugh and to feel good about themselves and their anthropomorphic feelings. Shows on TV? Yeah, there is an Emmy, but it’s a tennis match between a few consistent comedies.

But this isn’t so everywhere — especially in Asia where dramatic animation has merited praise alongside Live Action Television — and even we Westerners are now entering some serious animated play with streaming services opening up the world of TV.

And the animation starts to have a new adult moment, with darker, heavier, more violent content (this time without the empty inanity of Beavis and Butthead, or of South Park, we will still look at those classics however). BoJack Horseman and Archer have proven that comedies can still have a great deal of heart. Series such as Amazon’s Undone find creative ways of illustrating mental health challenges. And shows such as Big Mouth show that you can be as disgusting as an old Eddie Murphy set, while still containing many meaningful things.

All that said, we still love old comedies and classics of animation from the past. And, hey, children’s toons are still some of the best ever. Here are the 37 best animated TV shows to love the medium.

Harley Quinn (2019 – Present)

For decades, Batman and Joker owned the spotlight but now it’s the turn of the Joker assistant. Harley Quinn, previously known as Dr. Harleen Quinzel, now a bit crazy ehemalo-Joker sidekick, is now the star of her own highly self-conscious animated DC Universe comedy series. Harley Quinn now reviews Harley’s life following Joker in his second season, mocking both the superhors and macho tropes and letting you laugh hysterically. A top-notch voice talent (Kaley Cuoco is Harley, and Lake Bell is Poison Ivy), and Batman and Joker, just enough, remind you that Gotham was Dark Knight before the world of Harley.
